Almost everything on this journal is locked, with only a few entries left open to let you get some idea what I'm like. I am open to new friends, but to friend you back, I would like to know who you are. I don't have to know you before from somewhere, but at least come, say hello. This doesn't count of course if we met at a friending meme or see each other around often enough.

I try to read everything my friends post, I'm not as good with commenting as I used to be, but I do try. If you feel that we have nothing to say to each other, feel free to defriend me, I won't hold that against you.

I mostly write about my life with an occasional fandom comment. Recently I'm obsessed with sangeuk dramas and tea, so expect me to mention them a lot.

Cdramas vol 1

A few dramas that were left out of the last post for the simple reason that they are not kdramas. Here are three historical cdramas (okay, one is hkdrama) for you. All of them deal with the life in emperor's court, but duuring three different dynasties in three different millenia.

I just finished the last one two days ago and got really confused with the ages. At first they really didn't indicate how much time has passed since her arrival. A few years maybe. Then she got married and 14 years passed, soon afterwards four more years passed. That would mean she spent at least 20 years in the past. Then she travels back to the future. Some time has passed, but it doesn't feel like 20 years, for example her fiancé is still around. So she got young again? Nobody is surprised she has aged twenty years? I just don't get it. The fact that they didn't even try to make the actors look older as the time passed doesn't help at all.

Yesterday I made the guinea pig video and forgot the camera in video mode. Today a squirrel had breakfast in our bird feeder and my mum wanted to make pictures. She didn't even realise she was filming it. The result is a lot of videos with the camera randomly jerking around and running commentary by mum and grandpa. XD

There's something about Dickens

I have been doing "research"(read "killed time with costume dramas"). And it made me realise that I haven't really discussed Dickens with anyone and I would like to know where my opinions stand in the general view.

If you had him as compulsory reading it is all probably boring old news to you, so hence the cut.

User manual WTF

I've been in hermit mode again for a while. I'll try to come back soon, but I thought I would share this before it got old news.

The new potato peeler came with instructions. No wonder the Estonian sticker only say potato peeler. cookie point for anyone who can figure out what the first point is supposed to be.

cut for image, no way I'm going to type itCollapse )

Mansfield Park

It took a while this time around. I hope it is still coherent, it was written in parts over two days with sentences added wherever I remembered something else without going through all of it again before posting.

Mansfield Park is a bit special to me among the six completed Austen novels. I actually saw the 1983 tv series before reading the book and I read it a few years later than others because of availability issues.

The general plot for those who have not read it: Fanny's parents have more children than they can afford and lives with her rich aunt's family. She is constantly reminded that she is not equal to her cousins. The family gets close to charming and shallow Crawfords and several relationships develop. She is the only one who sees them for what they are. Eventually the family starts to realise the timid and highly moral Fanny's worth while her female cousins demonstrate lack of virtue and principles and she gets married to the cousin she has loved all along.

Besides rereading the book I watched three adaptations - one series and two movies. With Mansfield Park the problem is that Fanny is not an attractive character. Austen's own mother called her insipid. She is shy, timid, highly moral and infinitely grateful for any small kindness. We are used to have heroines who rebel against the parents' conservative ways. Sparkling, lively , charismatic people, Fanny is exactly the opposite. At least the two latest adaptations try to "fix" it by giving Fanny some more spirit. It is hardly the same story.

Let's talk about what I sawCollapse )
This has become long enough. I have made picspams of all the versions to share more pictures of fashions and and anything else that caught my attention. 1983, 1999 and 2007

And now I go to sleep.
