Tea community

I didn't mean to come out with it so soon, but I did it. tassike_teed - a small community for tea. So far I have made some posts about the teas I have been drinking, but it's getting a bit lonely there. If you are into tea or have friends who are - everybody is welcome to join. I have no idea where to promote it, so some spreading the word would be welcome.

In case you are curious tassike_teed means a cup or a little cup of tea in Estonian. The -ke ending is similar to -ita/-ito ending in Spanish making it sound small or cute. I took it because it was available, in hindsight it was not such a good idea for English community. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do when I created it.

Edit:
Now that I have made my own, I finally find a tea community. However it's huge with over a thousand members. Mine is more like a private club. Would you feel comfortable posting in a huge comm just to say "hey, I bought this new tea. the taste was such and such. I liked it."? And do it every time you do.

Even paid accounts can have ads. :P

I have had things to post about, but like always I've kept pushing it to some mysterious time when I sit down and go through all the posts on my f-list including the comms and then make thorough well researched posts. This time I try to keep things simple.

I kind of like this commercial

Kind of random. The song is a play on the final verses of Estonian national epic where the hero promises to return like they always do, but there is a chainsaw and other strange stuff added. XD I didn't even know such a song existed. link.

Can you guess what they are advertising?

Pride and Prejudice

This is probably the most popular of Jane Austen's novels and I'm unoriginal enough to favour it to the others. So it happened that I saw four different versions (two series and two movies) and read the book. I don't know how I'll ever manage to fit it all in one post, but I'll try.

Again for those unfamiliar with the story, "Pride and Prejudice" is like all of Austen's work about young ladies finding suitable husbands. the theme for this one is not to trust first impressions and social expectations and look past pride and prejudice. At the same time it is a witty observation on the local society in general and has quite a few ridiculous characters.

Since I saw so many versions this time (the 1940 movie, 1980 miniseries, 1995 miniseries and 2005 movie) i need to be more systematic if I want to compare them all. Be prepared to a lot of personal opinions.

Persuasion

So, here it is, my first Austen comparison post.

For those, who don't know, Persuasion is Jane Austen's last complete novel. Eight years ago Anne Elliot fell in love with captain Frederick Wentworth, but since her family and friends disapproved of him she let herself be persuaded to break their engagement. Now she still loves him and meets him again, but it doesn't look like he is willing to forgive her.

I reread the book and watched the 1995 and 2007 movies. This post will be heavy on spoilers, so beware.

Pictures and spoilers insideCollapse )

All in all the 1995 movie was much more true to the book, had stronger naval themes, let Anne's life be more mundane to bring out her distress with her life, 2007 version spelled the feelings out, let the characters show their despair more openly, and took more liberties while not deviating from the original plot too much and is maybe a bit more visually pleasing, at least where the actors are concerned. I can't say that I strongly prefer one version, both are well made. If I were to list Austen books in the order of preference, I believe it would take second or third place. The plot is unusual because it is not about the first falling in love, we are not even told how it happened, it is a thing of the past. The heroine is not silly like some other Austen heroines are. The text looks a bit hard to read and I would like more showing than telling of the characters' virtues and shortcomings, but the general impression is good.

Done at last. It took much longer than it had any right to take. Next Pride and Prejudice. It may take some time since it has much more adaptations available and at least my edition is much thicker than Persuasion.

So any suggestions to make those posts more interesting the next time?

Anime spring 2009

I got a backwards compliment yesterday. I was eating lunch with two of my co-workers and they agreed that the person, who had my job before me was "considerably stupider" than me. I really don't know what to make of it. Is it a compliment or am I just not as stupid as she was.

Anyway, I finally managed to pull myself together and start with this anime introduction post. I checked out two more, but didn't finish the first episodes so they won't be discussed here. Maybe in a way it's a good thing that I was too lazy to write this earlier since I had time to see more than one episode. A lot of fantasy this year and interestingly a lot of those are based on some kind of video games.

The kdrama post of doom

I've been watching a lot of historical kdramas and recently I've had trouble finishing them. The main problem for me is the endless intrigues. Intrigues are interesting and all, but there's such a thing as too many of them. i was going to make a general post about the fun and woes of kdramas, but then it also came up with minion_master and I decided to go for an introductory post instead. I'll try to not make it too long.

Some of those dramas I watched as early as up to two years ago, some I'm still watching, they are all worth watching, but with some I just can't make myself to finish.

I think I will start to make posts about my virtual dragons, but I don't want to bother people who have no interest in them. So I'm setting up a filter. Anyone interested in being on it?

Three ficlets

Hello! *waves* I'm not dead. I've been on a self-imposed friends ban for a while in hopes of finally getting the birthday presents written. Well, I have... something. Too short and rather pointless, I have to admit, but here they are. I'm starting to wonder if I ever manage to write something that is not at east a month late. I'll try to catch up with two weeks worth of your posts. I will, but it may take time, especially if wrote fic.

helike, flavoring, helreginn, those are for you. I really didn't know what to get you, you can choose yourself which one is for you. they all share the theme of unexpected.
