For those, who don't know, Persuasion is Jane Austen's last complete novel. Eight years ago Anne Elliot fell in love with captain Frederick Wentworth, but since her family and friends disapproved of him she let herself be persuaded to break their engagement. Now she still loves him and meets him again, but it doesn't look like he is willing to forgive her.
I reread the book and watched the 1995 and 2007 movies. This post will be heavy on spoilers, so beware.( Pictures and spoilers insideCollapse )
All in all the 1995 movie was much more true to the book, had stronger naval themes, let Anne's life be more mundane to bring out her distress with her life, 2007 version spelled the feelings out, let the characters show their despair more openly, and took more liberties while not deviating from the original plot too much and is maybe a bit more visually pleasing, at least where the actors are concerned. I can't say that I strongly prefer one version, both are well made. If I were to list Austen books in the order of preference, I believe it would take second or third place. The plot is unusual because it is not about the first falling in love, we are not even told how it happened, it is a thing of the past. The heroine is not silly like some other Austen heroines are. The text looks a bit hard to read and I would like more showing than telling of the characters' virtues and shortcomings, but the general impression is good.
Done at last. It took much longer than it had any right to take. Next Pride and Prejudice. It may take some time since it has much more adaptations available and at least my edition is much thicker than Persuasion.
So any suggestions to make those posts more interesting the next time?
So, here it is, my first Austen comparison post.
